“STEREOTYPE: Class, typecast, tab, pigeonhole, categorise, sort, put down as…”

Recently I saw a post on a particular social media web site and I felt quite agitated about it. The post referred to a group of people working in the security industry by others in the same arena. There has always been that banter, battle, competition between rivals in any business, there is the competition between departments of those businesses too, this can be healthy and profitable to a company as it increases profits, however, and this is just my opinion, in security it can go beyond a critical level and belief that darkens this vocation. There is more testosterone in the air than a bodybuilders locker room!

You find Door Supervisors thinking they are better than Events Security, a Close Protection Operative who walks next to a multi-millionaire businessman or a celebrity thinking they are above someone who works on the Residential Security Team for the same client, and all of them thinking they are above the guy on the building site stood out in the pouring rain. Can you actually be serious to say you are better standing outside a hotel room in a 6-star hotel for twelve hours than the guy willing to risk his life from thieves stealing materials, whilst outside in the rain for the same amount of time?

Each person has a vital role to play and that is to keep something or someone safe and secure. Now before you jumped down my throat on this, I totally agree that there is a reason that different levels of pay should match the different levels of threat and risk, it is the stereotyping of individuals I am referring to that should makes us stop and think to reflect our actions on.

One thing I have always thought and considered when working in the security profession is everyone is the same. We all come under the same umbrella that is called “Security”. A glossary of “Security” is safety, refuge, safekeeping, protection, well-being, all covering the same area of the conglomerate you are in. Should we be stereotyping another person in the same organisation?

In Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) we are taught not to put labels on people or stereotype another person. This is one aspect of NLP that I admire. I have yet to come across someone who looks down on another, is not willing to help his fellow compatriot in the same business, there is that genuine “family environment” in the profession of support and encouragement for a fellow coach and Practitioner. Those in the security sector could learn a lot from this as can any business.

“Respect the other person’s model of the world” is the first presupposition of NLP that I learnt and if we could apply this in security it would be a most positive start to making the industry a much better arena to work in.

In NLP we are shown not to put people in “boxes” and is one reason I have for not continuing to work on “The Circuit” as it is not helpful for the business and creates hate and a lack of trust. “People are not their behaviours” is another presupposition of NLP. Whether you work as a Door Supervisor, a Security Guard, or a Close Protection Operative, this is the behaviour, the person themselves could be the most trustworthy person you could ever have when it comes to covering your back when in a difficult situation.

There is a lot to be learnt from NLP that any security establishment and its members could benefit from. They could learn the benefits of the right communication, learn a lot about themselves if they could only open their minds to reality and let go of their ego’s.

Imagine the scene; you’re out in the street, wearing your new overly expensive suit with sunglasses that are too big for your face, your celebrity client wants to walk down the street despite your best efforts to convince them its safer to be in the car, you walk towards a huge crowd of people and just one person in that crowd recognises your client. You are then mobbed by the crowd who are either cheering or jeering, want an autograph or just want to get their name in the paper by putting an egg on your client’s head! Can you honestly tell me you would refuse the assistance of back-up from someone you know has a background of being a Door Supervisor? Can you honestly tell me that that person should not be in the same arena and scenario you are in, who has probably got more experience in dealing with such a setting? Of course you wouldn’t. You would want all the reinforcement you could get.  So for what purpose do you discredit someone of that profession?

Yet another presupposition of NLP is “communication is in the response you receive” and that kind of communication, that level of disrespect for a fellow colleague in security will continue to ruin the industry. And until you realise your own behaviour there will always be that lack of trust and disregard for each other.
